Course

Digitales Spiel
Grundlagenseminar, Module: Material/Skulptur/Code
Lab D Filzgraben 8-10 4OG

Computer games are part of everyday culture. The field ranches from AAA million-dollar productions to various forms of subcultural works done by individuals. Since the late 1990s they are also the subject of sustained artistic inquiry, known artist such as Bill Viola, Harun Faroki or Feng Mengbo explored their potential.

The seminar will be an introduction into digital games focusing on innovative and expressive forms play. We will look into game culture (mainstream to subculture eg. radical games and outsider games), do hands-on game design exercises (technical & non- technical) and transform/appropriate existing games to new forms of art. The focus of the seminar is not on develop market ready design products, but rather on getting an understanding about game culture, development and how to use games as an expressive medium.

An affinity with games and technology might help but is not mandatory. However an introduction into 3D, coding, game engines will be proposed.
